Tournament Administration,

Welcome to the 41st Annual International Jewish Men’s Slo-Pitch Tournament

The 2019 IJMSPT will be held this year over Labor Day Weekend at Power Park which is located behind the City of Novi’s Civic Center.  Novi is a suburb of Detroit that is home to a multitude of dining and entertainment options.  This four-diamond hub are the same diamonds that we played on in 2012, the last time the tournament was played in Detroit.  As in past tournaments, all teams will play a total of six qualifying round games on Saturday August 31st and Sunday September 1st with the top eight teams qualifying to play Monday morning September 2nd in the one game elimination Championship Playoffs.

Player and Guest Fees:  The Player Fee is $230 US Dollars (hereafter US$) for those teams who prepay at least 10 players by July 1st, and $250 US$ per player for those teams who do not prepay at least 10 players by July 1st. This year’s Player Fee is the same as last year’s Denver tournament.  There is no charge for guests to enjoy the hospitality room on Friday and Saturday nights. The cost to eat lunch at the diamonds Saturday and Sunday with the players and to attend the Sunday Night Dinner Banquet is $100 US$ for each Adult Guest and $50 US$ for each Child Guest under age 18.

Team Registration and Team Deposit:  Managers of returning and new teams may register their teams online beginning June 1, 2019.  Returning teams who played last year in Denver are guaranteed a spot in this year’s tournament provided the manager registers their team online and we receive their team’s Player Fee deposit of at least $1,250 US$ by July 15th. To secure the early registration Player Fee rate of $230 US$, teams must mail their check with a postmark no later than July 1st for at least $2,300 US$.

Once we reach 12 teams who have registered and paid their required deposit, we will only be adding two teams at a time.  In other words, if a 13th team registers and pays its deposit, that team will be on a waiting list. The 13th team will be given a tournament berth if a 14th team registers and pays their fee, or if one of the first 12 teams that registered and paid withdraws. The maximum number of teams we have room for is 16.

We are pleased to announce that our Tournament Sponsor is the B’nai B’rith Pisgah/Zeiger Sports & Entertainment Lodge. This Tournament was originally started by the Toronto B’nai B’rith and we are pleased that this important Jewish organization is once again associated with our tournament. Managers should make their checks payable to “B’nai B’rith Pisgah Zeiger Lodge” and mail them to:

Acknowledgement and Acceptance of IJMST Mission, Rules and Blueprint: By registering your team you are agreeing to abide by the IJMST Mission Statement which states that:

“The mission of the IJMSPT is to provide an opportunity for Jewish men from around North America to assemble in a different host city each year to share their common passion for softball and to socialize.

The spirit of the tournament is based on the core values of sportsmanship, Judaism, and building relationships with other Jewish men who hold these values in high regard and share the same passions.”

By registering your team, you are acknowledging that you have read and agree to abide by the 2019 Tournament Rules & Regulations.  Among the rules, General Rules #7 states:

The following acts will not be tolerated and will result in ejection from the game:

  • Profane or abusive language.
  • Visible displays of temper, such as throwing a bat.
  • Intentional and violent collision with an opposing player.
  • Any player ejected from two games will be ejected from the tournament.

By registering your team, you are acknowledging that you have read and agree to abide by the 2019 Tournament Blueprint. One topic addressed in the Blueprint is the matter of non-Jewish players. This tournament has multiple teams that currently have non-Jewish players on their rosters, including the two established Detroit teams. A number of these players have played for many years and have become part of the fabric of the tournament. We welcome these players to play in our 2019 Detroit tournament. Our Tournament Blueprint requires that the roster of new teams consist of only Jewish players.

We understand that teams traveling to the tournament, whether they are long-established or brand-new teams, often find it challenging to have a 100% Jewish roster.  We ask you to contact Rick Sherline of the 2019 IJMSPT Detroit Host Committee Co-chair should you be considering adding a new non-Jewish player to your roster.  Rick and the Detroit Host Committee will attempt to find a Jewish ballplayer to add to your team who will fit your needs.  If we are unable to fill your roster with a Jewish player, we can consider granting an exception to allow you to add a non-Jewish player, if justified.

We have the responsibility to adhere to the spirit of our Mission Statement to maintain this tournament’s Jewish identity.  While we will try to accommodate any legitimate special requests, our decisions will always be guided by what is in the best interests of the tournament and final.  For example, we will decline a team’s request to add a non-Jewish player should the request appear to be motivated primarily due to the player’s softball skills.  Such a motive clearly clashes with our tournament Mission statement.

Host Hotel and Rental Cars:  Our host hotel is the Embassy Suites Detroit Livonia/Novi.  Our tournament’s preferred room rate assumes that the traveling teams will stay at the host hotel.  The Embassy Suites guestrooms are very reasonably priced at either $112 or $119 per night plus tax and includes a complimentary breakfast as well as a happy hour every evening with an open bar and light snacks.  Please note there are a limited number of rooms with two double beds.  We encourage you secure your room reservations timely to secure your desired room type.

If enough players do not stay at the host hotel, our host committee could be subject to a penalty in our contract for falling short of our room commitment.  We will be monitoring the hotel reservations team by team.  If a team does not reserve at least five rooms for three nights, we may have to assess that team a surcharge to cover a portion our penalty fee.  Please insist that your players stay at the host hotel to avoid the possibility that the penalty clause in our hotel contract is triggered.

It is our expectation that we will reimburse any out of town team who have four to five players fly to Detroit for the cost of a minivan for three days.  Any team with 6 or more players who fly to Detroit for the tournament will qualify for reimbursement of two vehicles.  Please note that any team that does not meet a minimum total of 15 room nights reserved (5 rooms times 3 nights) will not qualify for a rental car reimbursement.

Next Steps:

  1. Please register your team online beginning June 1, 2019.
  2. Please mail your check payable to “B’nai B’rith Pisgah Zeiger Lodge” in the amount of at least $2,300 US$ by July 1st to qualify for the early registration Player Fee of $230 US$. A minimum team deposit of $1,250 US$ is due by July 1, 2019 to secure your team’s spot in this year’s tournament.  Teams who do not qualify for the early registration fee must also remit a second deposit of at least $1,250 US$ by August 1, 2019.
  3. Complete your team’s roster by August 9th so we have plenty of time to order the commemorative 2019 Tournament Jerseys.
