2012 Tournament // Detroit, Michigan

champion2012DetroitYour Detroit Host Committee trusts that you, your teammates and guests enjoyed the 2012 International Jewish Men’s Slo-Pitch Tournament. Our goal was to offer each of you a memorable experience for four days and three nights. We took our responsibility as tournament hosts seriously.

Could you sense our appreciation for your participation in this year’s tournament? We definitely targeted your senses as we tickled your taste buds with delicious and plentiful food all weekend, pleased your vision with a great host hotel that provided an outstanding venue for our hospitality, at the Banquet impressed your ears with rousing renditions of our national anthems as well as the pulsating soundtrack of the tournament video and had your heart pounding with excitement as you competed at the City of Novi’s Power Park four diamond hub, a truly outstanding softball complex.

The last time the tournament was hosted in Detroit was 2003 when the Detroit Motor City Hit Men lost in the semi-finals to the Detroit Bashers. The Montreal Royals prevailed in the Finals that year to capture the championship. This year, as fate would have it, the two host Detroit teams met in the Finals.

The fifth-seeded Detroit Mayhem were down 3 – 0 in the top of the sixth of the Championship game when they rallied for four runs to take a 4 – 3 lead which prevailed until the bottom of the seventh when the top seeded Detroit Motor City Hit Men tied the score with a leadoff homerun by Marc Tushman. Lyle Schaefer, a member of the Host Committee who was playing in his 26th tournament, followed with a single. After a walk moved pinch runner Todd Gesund to second base, Andy Schwartz delivered the game-winning hit to score Todd and secure the championship for the Detroit Motor City Hit Men.

As we pass the torch to Winnipeg, who will surely host an awesome tournament next year, we want to extend thanks to Mother Nature for not ruining our party with the remnants of Hurricane Isaac (on Tuesday it rained hard for much of the day), to all those who helped us over the long weekend and especially to the managers, players and their guests who traveled to Detroit from far and wide.

We look forward to seeing you in the Peg next Labor Day!!

2012 Detroit Host Committee,
