2015 Tournament // St. Louis, Missouri
The St. Louis host committee of the 37th annual International Jewish Men’s Slo-Pitch Tournament appreciates and thanks all those who gathered for an amazing and memorable weekend of bonding, plenty of food and fantastic softball. Once again the tournament featured upsets, new teams, pitchers duels and lots of excitement. As tournament hosts we set out to create a memorable weekend, and hope everyone had a tournament to remember – from visiting our beloved city, to bbq at every corner, to the action on the field.
We were honored to welcome Denver and Indianapolis to the party as well as a new St. Louis squad. It was equally fantastic to see our friends from Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Detroit, Las Vegas, Columbus and Chicago. BMAC (Bridgeton Municipal Athletic Complex) was the tournament setting and proved once again to be an outstanding backdrop for the games, from the plush outfields to their easy access. The indoor, air-conditioned concession stand was again invaluable due to the heat and humidity – a staple of a St. Louis summer!
The Sheraton at Westport Plaza served again as the host hotel. Its central location allowed guys to see the sights of St. Louis with minimum travel time. The large hospitality room featured pinball, bubble hockey, Ms. Pac-Man & Galaga video game and cornhole, and enough food to keep your Jewish mother proud. Local Italian and bbq were featured, while the beer, soda and water flowed.
On the field, the Detroit Motor City Hit Men once again claimed the title, winning back-to-back championships, and their sixth in the last eight years – beginning their current run the last time St. Louis hosted in 2008. This year they defeated the Chicago Pig Monsters, who entered the Monday bracket as the number eight seed. The Hit Men advanced to the finals with a tight 6-4 victory over the Toronto Gamblers and an 11-0 win over the first-year St. Louis Rise. The Pig Monsters upset the #1 seed Chicago Waste Management with a dominant 15-4 win, and continued to the finals with a 12-5 victory over the Las Vegas Explosion. Of the eight teams advancing to Monday, four were returning from 2014 (Hit Men, Waste Management, Pig Monsters and the Chicago Mitzvah Boys), while the others either returned to bracket play (Explosion, Gamblers and Montreal Royals) or were new to the tournament (Rise).
The round-robin games throughout the weekend featured tight games and lots of excitement. The Winnipeg Sweepers nabbed a victory, ending a five-year drought. The three new teams saw all levels of success, with the Rise’s 4-2 record, the Rocky Mountain (Denver) Chai finished 3-3 – just missing the playoffs by the differential of only five runs and the Naptown (Indianapolis) Naches having a tough 0-6 start to their tourney history. Participating playoff teams from 2014, the Detroit Mayhem and host St. Louis RiverDawgs both finished a disappointing 2-4, and ended tenth and eleventh, respectively.
On the field or off, we hope you had an amazing time in St. Louis. We set out to create a weekend to remember and believe we achieved our goal. We want to thank you all for making the trip and taking the time to again participate. And despite the heat and humidity (as expected), we couldn’t have asked for a better weekend!
We look forward to seeing everyone in Las Vegas in 2016!
