2019 Detroit Host Committee Wrap Up Letter
The Detroit Host Committee of the 41st annual International Jewish Men’s Slo-Pitch Tournament thanks the ten teams that participated in this year’s tournament. We hope you enjoyed our host hotel, the Embassy Suites Livonia-Novi, which is located less than 10 minutes from our tournament softball complex, the Power Park at the City of Novi Civic Center.
We made sure that there was plenty to eat and drink all weekend. The hospitality suite was well stocked on both Friday and Saturday nights with delicious comfort food and drinks, the hotel’s buffet breakfasts each morning were great, we served a tasty lunch at the diamonds both Saturday and Sunday and the Sunday night banquet dinner didn’t disappoint either.
Saturday’s competition on the diamonds ended with the Motor City Hit Men and the St. Louis Rise on top of the qualifying round standings through three games with unblemished 3 and 0 records. Closely on their heals followed the Denver Rocky Mountain Chai, Hamilton Hess Village and Chicago Waste Management with identical 2 and 1 records.
Sunday’s weather forecast threw us a curve ball. Saturday’s forecast for Sunday morning indicated early scattered light showers that would end by 9am or so. Expecting the light showers to end soon, the eight teams scheduled to play the first games Sunday at 9am arrived at the diamonds only to find out their games were in an indefinite rain delay. The teams returned to the host hotel to wait out the delay.
As fate would have it, the rain continued until around noon. We juggled our schedule around to fit everything in. Teams were invited back to the diamonds for lunch at 12:30pm and the games finally began at 1:30pm after the City of Novi’s maintenance crew did a phenomenal job preparing the diamonds and removing standing water on each diamond. The hotel accommodated us too by delaying the start of the banquet.
When the tournament finally resumed at 1:30pm, the two undefeated teams met for a showdown game which the St. Louis Rise won with a commanding 26 to 8 drubbing of the Motor City Hit Men. The qualifying round ended with the St. Louis Rise the top seed with a perfect 6 and 0 record and a run differential of plus 51 followed closely by the Denver Rocky Mountain Chai and the Motor City Hit Men with 5 and 1 records.
The Monday Playoffs found the four highest seeded teams, including the upstart Detroit Dingleberries who won all three games Sunday to end the qualifying round with a 4 and 2 record, winning their quarter-final games. The Semi-Final game victors were the #1 seed St. Louis Rise and the #3 seed Motor City Hit Men to set up a rematch of their qualifying game #4 which was won in convincing fashion by the Rise.
The Finals was an offensive gem. Like a heavyweight boxing match, each punch was met by a counterpunch for the first five innings. The Hit Men started fast out of the gate with a six run first inning. The Rise who scored only one run their half of the first inning began to claw back. By the end of the fourth inning the score tightened with the Hit Men hanging on to a two-run lead 11 to 9. Both teams scored six runs in their fifth inning to maintain the slim two-run difference.
The Motor City Hit Men lived up to their name in the top of the sixth with a remarkable barrage that all but assured their championship victory. The Hit Men pounded eight straight hits in a row to start the inning and finished the inning with a total of 17 runs on 17 hits! The final score of Motor City Hit Men 34 and St. Louis Rise 18 does not reflect how competitive these two teams played through the first five innings. This was the Motor City Hit Men’s 10th IJMSPT championship.
The Detroit Host Committee worked in earnest to make the 2019 tournament a success. We hope we met or exceeded your expectations with our hospitality, the softball diamonds at Novi’s Power Park and that you had a great time the whole weekend! We look forward to seeing you in Minneapolis next year.
